CFL's

REPLACE INCANDESCENT LAMPS WITH CFL'S

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL’s) are five times as efficient as incandescent bulbs. They also last eight to ten times as long, and produce much less heat than incandescent bulbs do when they’re on. This, in turn, can help to reduce the cooling costs to your building.

Although the most common types of CFL’s are the exposed spiral-tube models shown to the right, many have a plastic cover and look similar to incandescent bulbs. There are even models that look and perform similar to parabolic reflector (PAR) lamps and decorative “flame” lamps.

Today CFL’s come in many shapes and sizes to accommodate the needs of the marketplace. Advances in CFL technology have provided suitable alternatives to traditional incandescent and halogen indoor and outdoor lighting.

EVAPORATOR FAN CONTROLLERS

INSTALL EVAPORATOR FAN CONTROLLERS

In virtually all walk-in coolers and freezers air is cooled by forced-circulation evaporators that contain propeller fans powered by fractional-horsepower motors. Typically, these fans run continuously even though, on average, full airflow is only required about half the time. Evaporator Fan Controllers slow these fans when full speed operation is unnecessary, saving 10% to 60% in overall refrigeration energy and 20 to 40% of the operating costs of a walk-in cooler or freezer!

FLUORESCENT LIGHTING

T8 LAMP WITH ELECTRONIC BALLAST

Replacing T12 fixtures with magnetic ballasts and older generation T8 fixtures with electronic ballasts to 25W T8 lamps with electronic ballasts reduces lighting energy consumption by 20%. The thinner T8 lamps are approximately 40% more efficient than the thicker T12 lamps. In addition, they generally last 20% longer than the older T12’s.

This combination not only provides savings on your electricity bill, but also reduces operations and maintenance costs. It also makes a T12 to T8 retrofit one of the most cost effective upgrades; two-year payback is typical and payback in a year is common for businesses with long hours of operation.

Electronic Fluorescent Ballasts

In conjunction with the T8 lamps, new electronic ballasts are much more efficient than older magnetic ballasts for fluorescent lighting. Magnetic ballasts convert more of their input energy into heat, which creates two problems: extra energy consumption and extra heat for the HVAC system to handle.

Magnetic ballasts also produce noise due to the vibrations of the transformers and light flickering, which is especially noticeable when using a computer monitor. Electronic units eliminate the noise and the flicker.

LED EXIT SIGNS

INSTALL LED EXIT SIGNS

Illuminated exit signs are an important and legally required safety feature in your facility. In the case of an emergency such as a fire, their operation is critical in protecting the well being of your congregation’s members. By design, exit signs operate 24 hours per day, and can consume large amounts of energy to operate. Many exit signs in today’s buildings use older, incandescent and fluorescent/compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) technology. To make matters worse, many older exit signs require frequent maintenance due to the short life span of the lamps that light them. For example, many older exit signs consume over 350 kilowatt-hours (kWh) and cost $28 each annually to operate. LED exit signs use approximately 44 kWh of electricity annually to operate. Their low energy use not only means less pollution but also lower electricity bills as a LED exit sign usually costs less than $4 annually to operate.

LOW FLOW SHOWERHEADS

INSTALL LOW FLOW SHOWERHEADS

The United States Department of Energy (USDOE) has conducted several studies on the energy saving potential of low flow water devices. According to the USDOE, federal regulations mandate that new showerhead flow rates can't exceed more than 2.5 gallons per minute (gpm) at a water pressure of 80 pounds per square inch (psi). New faucet flow rates cannot exceed 2.5gpm at 80psi or 2.2gpm at 60psi, which will achieve water savings in the range of 25–60%.

There are two basic types of low-flow showerheads: aerating and laminar-flow. Aerating showerheads mix air with water, forming a misty spray. Laminar-flow showerheads form individual streams of water. If you live in a humid climate, you might want to use a laminar-flow showerhead because it won't create as much steam and moisture as an aerating showerhead.
